DNS Root KSK Rollover Radar & Cryptographic Health

Authoritative operational tracker for the Internet DNS Root Zone Key Signing Key (KSK). Monitors root trust anchor rollovers, cryptographic key ceremonies held at secure Key Management Facilities (KMFs), RFC 5011 automated update state, and the global migration toward elliptic curve cryptography (ECDSA P-256).

Inside the ICANN DNS Root Key Ceremony Architecture

The security of the entire global Domain Name System depends on the root trust anchor: a cryptographic key pair held in tamper-evident Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) situated inside secure Key Management Facilities (KMFs) in Culpeper, Virginia and El Segundo, California.

Every calendar quarter, IANA conducts an open, live-streamed Key Signing Ceremony. To access the master HSM, a quorum of independent volunteers known as Trusted Community Representatives (TCRs) must physically arrive with physical safe deposit box keys and smartcards. No single human being or organization holds unilateral power to decrypt the root keys.

Under RFC 5011, modern validating resolvers automatically learn and trust newly published keys (such as KSK-2024) after a mandatory 30-day standby hold-down timer, preventing widespread outages when old keys are retired.

Root Trust Anchor Verification Guidelines

System administrators configuring DNSSEC-validating recursive resolvers (BIND 9, Unbound, PowerDNS Recursor, Knot Resolver) can independently verify the root trust anchor using the ICANN trust anchor repository (data.iana.org/root-anchors).

RFC 5011 automated trust anchor update mechanisms automatically configure resolvers to accept KSK-2024 as the primary signing key once ICANN initiates the active rollover cycle, eliminating manual intervention across hundreds of millions of caching nameservers.
