Wholesale Registry Revenue Run-Rates: Inside the $2.1B DNS Operating Margin Engine

Evaluating annual wholesale gross revenue run-rates, ICANN $0.25 transaction remittances, and 68% EBITDA margins across major domain registries.

Operating an authoritative top-level domain registry at scale is one of the highest-margin infrastructure businesses in the global digital economy. Once a registry operator deploys its global Anycast DNS constellation, EPP provisioning cluster, and RDAP directory services, the marginal cost of inserting an additional domain name into the zone file is effectively zero.

By multiplying active reported domain volumes by contracted wholesale renewal rates and deducting mandatory ICANN transaction fees, we can reconstruct the annual revenue run-rates and operating margins of the world’s largest registries.

Verisign’s $1.78 Billion Wholesale Engine

Under the amended .com Cooperative Agreement and ICANN Registry Agreement, Verisign charges accredited registrars a wholesale fee of 10.26 USD per year for .com and 10.91 USD for .net:

  • .com Gross Wholesale Run-Rate: Across 159.54 million active domains, .com generates 1.637 billion USD in annualized wholesale revenue. After remitting $0.18 per domain (28.72 million USD) to ICANN, Verisign retains 1.608 billion USD in net registry yield at an estimated 68.5 percent operating margin.
  • .net Gross Wholesale Run-Rate: Across 12.99 million active domains, .net generates 141.72 million USD in gross wholesale revenue (131.98 million USD net of ICANN fees).

Why Niche High-Fee gTLDs Out-Earn High-Volume Discount Zones

One of the most striking findings in our revenue model is the divergence between unit volume and gross revenue among 2012-round new gTLDs:

  • .tech (Identity Digital): Despite managing a modest zone of 505,597 active domains, .tech commands a standard wholesale renewal fee of 38.00 USD, generating 19.21 million USD in annual wholesale revenue.
  • .xyz (XYZ.com): Manages nearly six times as many domains (2.97 million), yet because its standard wholesale fee is 11.00 USD (with heavy promotional discounting), its gross wholesale run-rate is 32.63 million USD.
  • .online and .shop (Identity Digital): With wholesale renewal fees of 24.00 USD and 26.00 USD, these two extensions combine for 96.05 million USD in annual wholesale revenue across 3.88 million domains.

ICANN’s Tax on the Root Zone

Under Section 6.1 of the Base Registry Agreement, every new gTLD operator pays ICANN a fixed 25,000 USD annual registry-level fee plus 0.25 USD per transaction above 50,000 domains. Inspect the full financial breakdown on our Wholesale Registry Revenue & Margin Model dashboard.
